Before the incident

I was preparing to do a blood draw on a patient that was about to leave via airlift. I prepped the site and cleaned his skin with chlorhexidine. I attempted to draw blood but was unsuccessful and did not get blood return from the site. As I pulled the needle from his skin and attempted to secure it I slipped and the needle grazed my thumb knuckle on my right hand. I immediate washed my hand with soap and water and reported the injury to my charge nurse and house supervisor.
