Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Employees were exposed to the hazard of repetative hand, wrist, arm and back motions from front end checking operations which includes bar code laser scanning, produce weighing and bagging of grocery items. These operations can result in repetative trauma disorders such as wrist, elbow, back and shoulder pain, ganglion cysts, and carpal tunnel syndrome, causing employee lost work time and/or permanent disability. b) Employees were exposed to the hazard of repetative hand, wrist, arm and back motions from bagging operations of grocery items. These operations can result in arm, shoulder and back pain causing employee lost work time and/or permanent disability. Feasible and acceptable abatement methods, among others, to correct these hazards are: STEP 1- Initiate a training awareness program to: Inform employees of the hazard of repetative motion; Inform employees of, and demonstrate work practices that can be used to minimize the heazard, such as use of power grips. Increase rotation of employees to jobs not associated with repetative motion. Institute adequate mandatory rest breaks. STEP 2- Provide an ergomomic evaluation by a qualified person, of all operations covered by this citation. The evaluation shall include, but not be restricted to: a) Review of OSHA recommendations listed above; b) Systematic evaluation with regard to existing and new work practices; c) Systematic evaluation with regard to existing and new workstations designs and implementation; d) Evaluation of effectiveness of the controls implemented. STEP 3- Abatement shall have been completed by implementation of feasible engineering and/or administrative controls.
