Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
the hazard of being struck on the head and upper body by parts of the air
conditioning vent
system which hang over the head of the operators.
a) In the Boarding area, the air ducts connected to the air conditioning
system were not
positioned to prevent operators from striking their head on the sharp
metal edges of the louvers,
exposing the operators to severe head injuries.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to:
1) relocate the louver so that the louver and air system is not located
directly over the head of
the operators, and/or
2) tape all the sharp edges of the louvers with rubber and perform
frequent and regular
inspections of the air ducts to ensure that they are secure.
