Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to the hazard of being struck by hoses and hose coupling due
to inadvertent opening of coupling:
a. HANCOCK INT'L AIRPORT, TERM. BLDG. EXPANSION AREA "D"
BAGGAGE AREA SOUTH TERMINAL OUTSIDE FIREPROOFING SHANTY:
Employee operating "Tommy Gun" model A375 fireproofing
machine with 4 inch diameter hoses through which fire-
proofing material is being pumped at approx. 500 p.s.i..
The first (3) hose couplings off the machine did not
have lock pins installed to prevent couplings opening
inadvertently from vibration and/or by accidental con-
tact from equipment or employees walking through area.
Among other methods one feasible method to reduce this
hazard is to ensure that lock pins are maintained in
couplings during pumping of fireproofing material.
