Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment or a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards
that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees.
The employees were
exposed to the hazard of being caught in or between activated extrusion
machine rollers.
Extrusion Department:  Employees were trained to place the edge or tip of
material as
close as possible to activated rollers during threading procedures.  The
employees are
exposed to hands and arms being caught between the rollers.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this
hazard is to instruct managers, trainers, and employees to avoid
operations or activities
which would require them to be placed into in running rollers.  In the
alternative, other
methods such as locking out the machinery prior to threading procedures is
acceptable.
ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION NOT REQUIRED.
