Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by and/or run over by the wheels of rubber tire gantry cranes. a) Throughout the facility, regarding the Travelift cranes, including but not limited to the Drott 500AI, the employer did not take adequate steps to protect employees from being struck by and/or run over by the wheels. Among other feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard is to ensure that all "groundspotters" are positioned inside the "spotters" cage prior to crane movement and, to either install wheel guards on all Travelift cranes or, provide two way electronic communication devices to operators, groundspotters, and other personal who may be exposed to the hazard of struck by and/or run over by the wheels. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (See enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").-Certification
