40.1-51.1.(a), Code of Virginia: The employer did not furnish employment
and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or
serious physical harm to employees in that:
(a) While using corrosive chemicals in the form of nitric, hydrochloric,
sulfuric and
acetic acids as educational tools for the purpose of teaching chemistry at
Loudoun County
High School 415 Dry Mill Road, Leesburg, Virginia. The employer had
employees exposed
to chemical burn hazards by not providing proper storage for corrosive
chemicals.
One feasible and acceptable abatement method is to provide employees with
an approved safety
cabinet that allows for the retrieval of corrosives from below eye level
only. The cabinet shall
also have a means to provide adequate ventilation and be approved for the
storage of nitric and
sulfuric acids.
