Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to heat:
a) On the 17th of June 2004 an employee died as a result of a heat stroke.
The employer did not
develop a heat stress program to include, but not limited to, the
following for protecting workers
in hot environments.
1) The four environmental factors that affect an employee (temperature,
humidity, radiant
heat and air velocity).
2) How personal characteristics such as age, weight, fitness, medical
condition and
acclimatization to the heat effect an employee.
3) Knowledge of heat disorders such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat
cramps,
fainting, and heat rash.
4) How personnel can prevent heat stress through engineering controls,
work practices,
alternating work and rest periods, acclimatization, and employee education.
5) Employees should know the symptoms for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
6) Employees should be trained on how to protect yourself and your
coworkers from heat
exhaustion and heat stroke.
7) What factor put you at increased risk such as medication, previous
heat-induced
illness, and wearing of personal protective equipment.
8) Employees should know what to do and who to call in the event of an
emergency.
