Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load: (a)BF Goodrich - On or about 05/09/05, the spreader bar used with the 1/4 ton hoist which was used to lift 85lb steel inserts which rubber runs through to the rubber tread machines, had not been load rated. The spreader bar was 30" wide. Employees working in the area were exposed to being struck by the load being moved. (b)BF Goodrich - On or about 05/09/05, the spreader bar used with the 2 ton chain hoist to lift forklift batteries had not been load rated. Employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the battery being lifted. (c)BF Goodrich - On or about 05/09/05, the spreader bar used with the 3-ton chain hoist to lift forklift batteries had not been load rated. The spreader bar was measured at 44"X4". Employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the battery being lifted. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard include, but are not limited to, complying with the American National Standard Institute, ANSI/ASME B30.20a-2001, "Below the Hook Lifting Devices"; ensure that all specially designed lifting devices are marked with the lifting capacity.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed: (a)BF Goodrich - Line #9 - On or about 05/09/05, an employee was observed operating a standard forklift and was not using the attached seatbelt. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to enforce the company's requirement for operators of powered industrial trucks to use/wear the restraint devices or seat belts.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by falling tires: (a)BF Goodrich - Tire Area - On or about 05/10/05, a 5-6ft. section of the overhead conveyor was inadequately guarded where tires could fall off of the inclined conveyor. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to perform regular inspections of the conveyor and ensure that side protection is adequate to prevent tires from falling from the conveyor.
