Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to explosion/fire hazards: a) On or about 11/12/08 in the Mill area; Timesaver model 237-2WW, an abrasive planner having mechanical material feed, is connected to an indoor enclosure-less dust collector ( Dustek brand model 1500 ) with an air handling capacity of 5500 cfm and is located adjacent to an indoor enclosure-less dust collector ( Dantherm brand model NFP- S750 ) exposing employees to fire hazards. ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this condition would be installation of a separate dust collector located outside for this and similar devices, if kept inside, installation of an automatic sprinkler located above the unit, or a spark detection and extinguishing system in the main duct located upstream of the unit, and reduce the air-handling capacity to ( 5000 cfm ) and separate the two dust collectors from each other by at least 20 feet, as described in Section 8.2.2.5.1.4 (7)* (b), (c), (g) in NFPA 664 - 2007, Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities.
