General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed, struck or pinned by a falling automobile: location: body shop on or about: 4/11/11 a) Employees use automobile lifts while repairing vehicles. The lifts (unnamed lift #1, unnamed lift #2, Hunter lift and Autoquip lift) were operated without jack stands or locking devices engaged. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: Follow the instruction in the Lifting it Right A Safety Manual from the Automotive Lift Institute page 16, which states "If you'll be working under a lift that does not have a locking device or is below the point where the locking device engages, place four jack stands under the vehicle's frame or suspension for support." NOTE: Because abatement of this violation is already documented in the inspection case file, the employer need not submit certification or documentation of abatement for this violation as normally required by 29 CFR 1903.19.
