WORKSHOP:  The western and eastern sides of the platform of the 106 annealing furnace were not guarded by standard railings.

29 CFR 1910.179(g)(1)(v): Pendant control boxes shall be constructed to prevent electrical shock and shall be clearly marked for identification of functions.    WORKSHOP/MILL/EXTRUSION BAY:      1.  The markings for the start/stop buttons of the pendant control box for the P&H 46, 6-ton overhead bridge crane, No 9216, were worn out and not clearly visible.    2.  The pendant control box for the P&H overhead crane, 19-59-87-286 was not effectively closed due to a broken hinge and was repaired with a piece of tape.     ABATED DURING THE INSPECTION.

One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. WORSHOP/MILL:  The alloy steel sling chains, of the following cranes used to hoist metal blocks/billets with the overhead bridge cranes did not have permanent affixed tags and/or identifications stating the size, grade, rated capacity, and sling manufacturer.    1. Eastern hoisting unit; two chain slings; no tag on the one of the single master link chain sling, and no capacity on the single master link chain sling.       b.  Western hoisting unit; no tag on the two (2) single master link chain slings.    2.  48 P&H, 6-ton overhead crane.    ABATED DURING THE INSPECTION.
