Employees have been wearing a surgical mask in place of a respirator during paint applications.  (b) San Francisco Boatworks: Employees such as mechanics who perform welding on stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum were exposed to health hazards because they have not been provided respirator to wear under the welding hood.

(a) San Francisco Boatworks: Employees such as mechanics who have been provided full-face and half-face respirators were exposed to respiratory health hazards because a proper training was not provided on how to select a correct respirator for each task such as sanding, welding, grinding and painting.   (b) San Francisco Boatworks: Employees such as mechanics who have been provided full-face and half-face respirators have not been  trained on when to change the cartridges on respirators and how to clean and maintain a respirator. On the day of the inspection , CSHO found one 3M half-face respirator hanging from a nail in the machine shop.

The guarding device shall be in conformity with any appropriate standards therefor, or, in the absence of applicable specific standards, shall be so designed and constructed as to prevent the operator from having any part of his body in the danger zone during the operating cycle.   San Francisco Boatworks Machine Shop: Employees who work in the machine shop were exposed to caught-in and amputation hazards from the unguarded chuck  of a Rexon heavy duty drill press (RDM-170A).
