Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
The hazards of fire and/or explosions of aluminum dust. The hazards
exist due to the use of improper dust collection systems such as the
use of fabric type collectors and dry type dust collectors being
located indoors.
a) Grinding Room - Ace dust collector and desktop dust collectors used
to collect aluminum dust were located indoors and equipped with
fabric type dust collectors.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to install, use, and maintain an aluminum dust
collection system in a safe manner. See National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) standard No. 65 on Aluminum processing and finishing
for guidance.
