An employee was replacing a broken pin at the sorter bay. After removing the pin, the employee used a carter pin to energize the valve. The cylinder rod extended and he used his left index finger to check the alignment of the clevis and Pad-I. The carter pin slipped, causing the valve to de-energize and the cylinder to retract and amputate his left index fingertip.
