Two mechanics were trying to reposition a crooked race inside a pit furnace that was preventing the furnace cover from closing properly. One of the mechanics was at the upper end of the furnace using a long, steel tool to strike the race in an attempt to pry it loose. The second mechanic was near the bottom of the furnace, checking the position of the race after each attempt to move it. The steel tool struck his hand and amputated his right ring fingertip.
