An employee was holding a tong that was gripping a string of pipe that was within a mouse hole on a drilling rig. The crew was trying to remove 2 of the 3 sections of pipe from a string. On the third attempt to attach a pipe spinner unit, the pipe spinner unit impacted the employee's left thumb. The thumb was broken and lacerated.
