An employee was using a lathe with a grinder attachment to re-surface a roller. He was attempting to remove a pile of cuttings from the lathe when his right thumb entered a nip point created by the rotating material and grinder attachment. His right thumb was amputated to the first knuckle. The lathe was running at the time of the incident.
