Before the incident
Operator was tasked with drilling out holes on a part.
What happened
The operator was drilling out the holes on the part. The drill was mounted to a fixture to alleviate fatigue of holding the drill. The part rested on the table and the operator drilled out 17 holes. The parts are also hot. The operator was wearing a glove level 1 cut resistant glove and a cotton glove underneath to protect their hand from the heat. The operator noted that when drilling the last hole the furthest from the radial arm of the drill it was a stretch and had to hold the part with the left hand while lining the drill but with the right. As the drill was activated and bringing the drill down it felt like the drill shifted towards the operators thumb. The glove caught the top layer ripped away but the cotton wrapped around the drill bit. The operator was able to extract their hand away from the drill but when removing the glove the left thumb was lacerated at the joint and the top of the thumb peeled back still attached but over the tip of the bone.

Left thumb was lacerated on the inside of the hand at the mid thumb joint and was pulled back over the thumb bone but still attached.
Object or substance involved
Pneumatic drill fixture. This was immediately removed a fixture was made to hold the part and a CNC was modified to perform this operation.
