What happened

I was present for C-section as first assist. During fascial closure I was holding a ribbon retractor to expose the fascial edge for the surgeon when my right hand slipped on the retractor into the path of the needle. Upon recognition of the needlestick the needle was disposed of and I was excused from the operating room. I manually expressed blood from the site of the injury multiple times. I also immediately washed the area with a povidone iodine surgical prep sponge and then completed an additional hand wash with soap and water. After this initial first-aid I sought out the nurse supervisor to report the incident.
