An employee was assembling a large gearbox using the lifting hoist. Each end has swivel hooks hooked onto the assembly on the shaft ends. When he went to hook the hoist to the customer end the hook swiveled with his gloved hand on the chain hoist. As the weight shifted, his left index finger was caught between the chain and the chain adjustment resulting in amputation up to the first distal joint.
