An employee was removing a governor from an elevator system with the govern rope suspended from the sheave. A co-worker grabbed the suspended cable to move it out the way when it slipped through the cable grab and pinched employee's right middle finger between the cable and the sheave, resulting in an amputation at the distal interphalangeal joint.
