An employee was dumping a "self-dumping chip bin" (on the forks of a forklift) into a 3- or 4-foot-tall dumpster. The bin tilted forward. Thinking it was going to slide off the forks, the employee reached to grab the bottom of the bin to stop it. The bin then rotated back. The tip of the employee's left middle finger, from the first knuckle past his fingernail, was caught between the bin and the top of the forklift pocket frame. The fingertip was amputated just above the first knuckle.
